Litter for your Hedgehog

Some hedgehogs can be trained to use a small dish filled with disposable litter, as well as their wheel. When litter training your hedgehog their are both good and bad litters for your little one.

Unsafe Litters

  • Any litter that produces a lot of dust like a clay is bad for hedgehogs as it will affect their respiratory system.
  • Clay litter should not be used with males as it could get stuck in their penis sheath if they decide to either masturbating in the litter bowl, or while urinating.
  • Clumping litter should never be used as it can get stuck in all hedgehog private parts as well as their noses.

Safe Litters

  • Yesterday's news is a very low dust litter. It has large pieces that cannot irritate or just stuck in a hedgehogs privates, as well as absorb a lot of moisture. If you have a digger, he may lay in the dish and push the litter out of the bowl. This can be solved by putting his stool in the dish to show him it is for pooping and give him a treat. This will often show them only to do their business there.
  • A wheel is another great and safe litter box. While your hedgehog may get dirty running through all the stool and urine, it won't get anythign stuck in its privates, or push the wheel off its stand.

If you have any litters that you find safe or unsafe, please e-mail me at
